Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve. Over time, the optic nerve becomes damaged resulting in a loss of vision. The damage begins insidiously with peripheral vision changes that are not detectable by the individual. Because special testing is available to pick up early damage from glaucoma and because early treatment may often prevent vision loss, regular eye exams are important to screen for this disease.

Although the exact cause of damage to the optic nerve in glaucoma is unknown, vision loss is associated with high eye pressure. This fact has led us to treat glaucoma patients with eye drops used daily in an attempt to lower the eye pressure. When damage progresses despite treatment with drops, laser surgery or filtration surgery become options.

Who is at risk for glaucoma?

The common risk factors are:
1. Increased age
2. Near-sightedness
3. African ancestry
4. Past injuries to the eye
5. A history of severe anemia or shock
6. Family history of glaucoma
